How to Find the Best Keywords for a Website

Learning how to grow free organic traffic for your website is everything in this online game! It can be hard for newcomers to achieve. But knowing how to find the best keywords for a website is a big chunk of the battle.

Would you like to get that task sorted out?

What if I show you how to steadily increase the traffic visiting your blog in a manner that you can easily replicate over and over? Stay with me because that’s the plan in today’s article.

Here are the specifics of what we’re going to cover today:

  • What is a keyword phrase?
  • Are keywords important for SEO (search engine optimization) and organic traffic?
  • The best SEO keyword research tool to grow your website’s traffic.

I don’t want to keep you in suspense, so let’s get to it!

What is a Keyword Phrase?

In this Internet era, not a week goes by that we don’t overhear someone say, “I’ll just Google it!” We have a font of knowledge at our fingertips, and we all use it regularly. For example, very few people make significant purchases today without reading some product reviews first.

I have 2 small (and very hairy) dogs myself. So, when I had to replace my vacuum cleaner recently, I naturally jumped online to search for “the best vacuum cleaner for pet hair.” That phrase I typed into a Google text box is a keyword.

Like millions of other Internet users, I had a problem, and I went online in search of a solution.

Seconds after typing in my query, Google returned the most relevant search results. How do they know what’s relevant? They find website content that contains the same (or a very similar) keyword phrase.

Users perform millions of searches per day, and these terms are all stored in a massive database. Website content is crawled and indexed based on keyword coverage.

Are Keywords Important for SEO and Organic Traffic?

Keywords are fundamental to the success of any website. If you know how to select and place keywords within your content, the search engines like Google, Bing, and Yahoo will send massive amounts of free (organic) traffic to your site. Organic traffic that you don’t have to pay a dime for sure beats paid traffic anytime!

working from home on a laptop

On a commute to the office, bumper to bumper traffic is a nightmare that can bring out those four-letter words. I’m sure you know a few of the ones I’m talking about 🙂 But, when you work from home on a laptop, virtual traffic overload is a dream that will have you doing the happy dance!

It’s no coincidence when a blog post appears at the very top of page 1 in a Google search results list. Those bloggers understand the power of keywords. They choose their words wisely and place them correctly using sound on-page search engine optimization techniques.

Characteristics of a Good Keyword

So, now you know just how powerful keywords are in generating organic traffic. And, you understand why they’re integral to the success of any online business venture.

But what criteria will you use to choose a good keyword?

An exceptionally good keyword for your blog will have the following qualities:

  • It’s highly relevant to your niche audience.
  • People perform searches for the term on a regular basis.
  • There aren’t a lot of other websites targeting the exact phrase.
  • The phrase makes grammatical sense you can easily write it as an element of a quality article.

Today, I’m going to introduce you to Jaaxy which is the best SEO keyword research tool available online. You’ll get a chance to play with Jaaxy yourself in just a moment and see just how this works. And, how you can find some great keywords for your website.

First, let’s look at these criteria a bit more closely.

Relevance

Hopefully, you have a crystal-clear image in your mind’s eye of your ideal reader. You feel like you know your readers well, understand what makes them tick, and possess a solid understanding of the topics they search in Google. Always choose your keywords carefully with your niche firmly in mind.

There are many sources for coming up with relevant topics that you can finetune utilizing a keyword research tool. Comments on your blog posts, forums like Quora, and following other blogs within your niche are all possibilities. Another super resource I like to use is a free mind mapping tool called Answer the Public.

Type in a subject related to your niche (maybe one of your blog categories) and generate a mind map “wheel” with dozens of ideas. Here’s a sample wheel I generated using the term “affiliate marketing.”

Can we agree there’s a bunch of great content fodder here? We can plug any of these terms into Jaaxy to find all the analytical information we need to arrive at a keyword decision.

Low Competition

Ideally, you want to choose low competition keywords. What that means is there aren’t many other websites targeting the same specific keyword. So, you give yourself a good shot at standing out from the pack. This may sound INSANE, but there are millions of these low competition gems.

What does that mean for you?

Huge opportunity! A keyword tool like Jaaxy can help you connect on a fundamental basis and reach out to consumers in whatever niche you decide to pursue. The power is awesome!

My 50+/50- Rule

I use a simple to understand 50+/50- rule when I search for keywords. I look for terms with more than 50 average searches per month and fewer than 50 competing websites. You can then build your website with a variety of low competition terms for which it’s much easier to rank.

At first, the traffic trickles in slowly. But over time, it’s like turning on a faucet full force. Sudden, Google is sending loads of visitors your way on a steady basis. Oh, and by the way, your traffic won’t be limited to folks searching for your target keyword.

Every post you put out there has multiple related phrases. We call them LSI (latent semantic indexing) keywords. I’m endlessly curious to check my Google Analytics account and see how many new search terms Google has identified on my site.

But, it all starts with low competition phrases that get you noticed and lead to higher rankings. This seems like a perfect place to give you a word of caution because I see newbie affiliates make this mistake every day. People see keywords with enormous traffic numbers (tens or even hundreds of thousands), and they lose all sense of perspective,

I get it!

Traffic like that is almost intoxicating, right? But you need to look at the competition. The big guns with a ton of authority and clout are going after that keyword. They can pull it off, but you and I don’t have the proverbial snowball’s chance of ranking for that term.

Furthermore, it’s a total waste of time and Internet bandwidth to try! Seriously, that’s the type of misstep that makes people quit without giving themselves a chance at success. Writing a post that faces overwhelming competition is a fruitless, thankless effort. But, there’s magic in the low competition keywords that build!

Grammar Still Counts

We heard it all the time as kids growing up in school, right? Our teachers reminding us that Grammar counts. Well, guess what? It still does! As you do your research, you’ll often spot keywords with no competition and spectacular traffic numbers.

But if terms make no grammatical sense, leave them alone. People get lazy when they’re typing in their searches, but that doesn’t mean they’re willing to read an article that’s gibberish 🙂 And, Google will penalize you for horrible grammar because they’re all about quality.

Rephrase those terms in a grammatically correct way, and you’ll see the realistic traffic for a keyword that you can use correctly.

You’ve created a list of relevant subject matter topics for your site, and you’re now ready to get down to business and find the best keywords to target. I picked one of the phrases from the mind map wheel above (“Is Affiliate Marketing a Business”)  to explore at a high level of detail.

Just type in your phrase and click the blue “Find Keywords” button.

Here’s a portion of the output I generated:

Jaaxy Keyword Search Results - Is Affiliate Marketing a Business

Column Explanations:

  • Keyword = a listing of similar phrases based on my keyword entry,
  • Avg = average monthly searches for each term.
  • Traffic = number of monthly visitors to expect if your post ranks high in the search engines.
  • QSR = the number of competing websites targeting this specific phrase. QSR is an abbreviation for Quoted Search Results.
  • KQI = a keyword quality indicator using a green, yellow, or red approach.
  • SEO = a search engine optimization score from 1 – 100 indicating the likelihood of randing given traffic and competition.

Using my 50+/50- rule, I see some excellent options here. Can you spot them, also?

Moreover, there are two additional Jaaxy features I also want to point out. One is the Brainstorm column. Click on any of these phrases to drill down and execute a new search. The second feature I want to highlight is the Alphabet Soup command in the menu bar.

The alphabet soup technique cycles through the letter a – z and adds words before or after your seed phrase. This tactic can quickly generate a ton of possibilities you hadn’t thought about. You’ll love it!

Create an Amazing Keyword List

Jaaxy is a super tool that can unearth tons of beautiful keywords that will keep you rolling in content ideas for weeks. Store them in a list and tick them off as you flesh out each phrase into a helpful article that your readers will eagerly consume.
