What Is The Upside App? Enjoy Cash Savings Everyday On Gas And Food!

The Upside App, previously called GetUpside, may well become your go-to money-saving companion. This ultimate guide will address all your questions including just exactly what is the Upside App, how does the Upside App work, and how this free and practical tool can benefit you.

You will quickly view Upside as your secret weapon against soaring prices. I know I do, I haven’t paid full price for a tank of gas since joining in 2020. I wrote an earlier review shortly after I first downloaded the App because I immediately recognized its usefulness.

Over time, Upside has greatly expanded the number of retail organizations it partners with making it an even more powerful tool for cashback savings. Between the expansion of savings opportunities and the rebranding, this seemed the ideal time to update my review.

I always have a bunch of questions about apps like this, and I’m sure you do as well. Things like, is Upside legit? Or, is this app worth my time? No one wants to waste effort on something that may not pan out, right?

Let me state right up front that Upside is indeed a legitimate platform from which I regularly receive cash payments. Moreover, the concept is an excellent one for most consumers because it’s focused on everyday purchases. Right now, I have 50 cashback offers to select from within a few miles of my home.

So let’s dive right into my Upside review, shall we?How to Make Real Money Online

What is the Upside App?

Upside is a free mobile app that adds value to the marketplace by connecting consumers and local businesses and enabling mutually beneficial transactions. Consumers save money on daily purchases while merchants attract new customers and grow their businesses.

Founded in 2015, the platform offers discounts and cashback opportunities from gas stations, restaurants, and grocery

stores. Upside Services, Inc. is the company that developed the program and launched it initially in the Washington, DC area.

Expansion occurred gradually in cities and states across the US. Upside initially focused on saving consumers money at the gas pump. Today you’ll also find offers from some of your local favorite eateries, big brand fast food restaurants such as Dominoes, and various convenience stores like Circle K.

It’s an arrangement whereby everyone wins. Local businesses attract new customers and more repeat business due to exposure through the App. Upside makes money by charging these participating brick-and-mortar establishments a fee equal to an agreed-upon percentage of the increased revenue resulting from the business’s promotion.

And, we consumers save more of our hard-earned money.

How Does the Upside App Work?

Unveiling a little cash-saving magic with this application is a very quick and straightforward process. You can get set in a matter of minutes.

The Upside app is available for download from either the App Store or Google Play. All you need is an email address and a password.  The app personalizes your cashback opportunities based on your geographic area, so you must also enable location tracking.

You’ll also want to be prepared to enter a promo code. The promo code sets you up to earn a one-time joining bonus. The bonus varies over time but as I publish this article it’s currently $15. So you don’t want to miss out on the additional savings. Our promo code is KPTP6 which will definitely work. There are also others available on the Internet.

When you open the app, you will see search buttons for gas, restaurants, and groceries in your area. Offerings vary greatly in different parts of the country so you’ll need to explore your own options. As I stated above, I have 50 offers available to me right now.

There are more than a dozen gas stations within a few miles of my home. Be sure to study your choices carefully because different gas stations often have widely different promotions. I recommend searching the app before you leave home to find your best price.

The biggest change for me over time is in the restaurant selections. When I first joined back in 2020, my restaurant options were limited to 3 different locations of the same franchise, Popeye’s Louisiana Kitchen. Today, I can indulge in a broad range of cuisines from local restaurants to fast-food family favorites without breaking the budget

It disappointed me initially to learn that no grocery stores participate in my city. Sadly. that’s still true today. But nationwide there are many participating grocers. So, you may have a better experience with grocery shopping in your neck of the woods.

There are a few things to be aware of when using the program to ensure there aren’t any surprises. The first step on your savings mission is to lock in your offer by hitting the ‘Claim’ button on the app screen. Once you claim your reward, you have a 4-hour window in which to make your purchase. Deals change several times throughout the day, so claiming your rebate before you make the purchase is required.

You also want to check the address carefully. There may be multiple participating gas stations in the same general area. But cashback will only be honored by the merchant you chose. And finally, you must pay with either a debit or credit card for validation purposes. Cash purchases do not qualify for rebates.

You will want to add the card you plan to use to the “My Wallet” tab within the app. One thing I really like is that you don’t have to provide your entire credit card number. Upside uses the first six and the last four digits on your card to validate your purchase.

The Actual Purchase Transaction

Purchases are finalized in one of two ways depending on the merchant. Neither approach is difficult but it still helps to be prepared.

Some of Upside’s partners have enabled what they refer to as “Check-In” processing. This is the case with the Circle K gas station I often use. GPS tracking is in place, which means that the app recognizes my arrival at the station. From there, all I have to do is click the “Check-In” button, pump my gas, and pay with the card I registered.

Some of the restaurants I frequent don’t have check-in capabilities enabled. In those cases, I have to snap a picture of my receipt and upload it within the app. This procedure takes seconds and works flawlessly. I guess I’m very comfortable with this because I use a bunch of rewards applications that rely on scanning receipts like Coinout and Fetch.

Helpful Tip: Login frequently to see if there are better days and times for saving money. For example, I discovered that the same eatery where I earned a 10% discount on Saturday afternoon offered me a 25% rebate on Tuesday. It seems shopping smarter can pay!

Upside Rebate Processing

Upsides’ website indicates that the processing of rebates occurs within 24 to 48 hours. After completing your purchase, check the ‘My History’ tab within the Upside Application. Your transaction will be listed with the name of the vendor and the date with a notation that it’s processing.

I receive a text message when processing is complete that tells me money has been added to my account. Easy peasy!

Each deal you claim can only be used to buy goods once.

The image below summarizes the 4 simple steps you need to take to put some extra money back in your pocket by using Upside.

How Does the Upside App Work

One more way to earn with Upside is through referrals of friends and family members. Everyone receives an invite code upon joining that you can share by email or social media. Everyone buys gas, right? So, this is an app you can feel good about sharing.

Help your friends to save money by sharing your invite code, and you’ll both benefit. Currently. both you and your referral receive a $15 bonus. You also earn 1 cent per gallon on every gas purchase they make using Upside in the future.

At this time, referral bonuses only apply to transactions at the pump. But, there are plans to expand the referral program in the future to include grocery and restaurant deals.

Special Offers

I was thrilled to log in a week or so ago and spot the special offer you see in the image below. Spend $5 at a participating convenience store to earn a $1/gal rebate? Count me in! I took advantage of this deal twice.

Upside Special Rebate Offers

How Do You Get Paid?

There are several ways to withdraw your Upside cash rewards. You can link your bank account or PayPal account. There are also digital gift cards available from a wide variety of popular retailers.

There’s no specified minimum for a PayPal withdrawal, but be aware that there’s a $1 processing fee for cash payments of less than $15.

The Upside App is Legit - $300 million Paid Out

The fee of $1 is a little steep, but I can live with waiting until I accumulate $15 in this case. Gas is a necessity that I purchase regularly. Therefore, it doesn’t take long to see my distribution.

Upside’s Commitment to the Greater Community

One last thing I can’t fail to mention is Upside’s commitment to various sustainability projects that have a positive impact on the broader community. The company commits 1% of its revenue to efforts related to its gas and food focus.

They contribute to projects that reduce carbon emissions. They also work with organizations like Food Rescue US to help connect restaurants and grocery stores that have food that would otherwise go to waste with local food banks. I find it comforting to be a part of these efforts.

Final Thoughts

What is the Upside App?  Personally, I think Upside is a nifty little app that has empowered me to save money on everyday gas and food purchases. I’m eager to see how the expansion plans continue to play out. Many areas have grocery partners already, and that’s a feature I’ll be keeping an eye on in the future.

Frequently, I review an app and then end up deleting it from my phone because I don’t see it as being worth my time because the earnings are minimal. A few years ago, I found the secret to generating a steady income online, which means that’s where I prefer to invest my efforts.

But Upside is an application that’s a proven keeper that I continue to use. Check out the savings opportunities in your area. It’s completely free to try. Therefore, there’s nothing but upside potential for consumers.

When every dollar counts, this is a genuinely helpful tool for saving money!

    • Yes, in my area Upside has expanded significantly since I first started using it. The App has been a great way to save on gas since its inception. These days I also have a large number of restaurants to choose from. It’s been fun trying out new places and different cuisines. We recently tried a Japanese restaurant for the first time that was excellent.

I hope the App works out well for you and thanks for commenting!

  2. Wow, what an informative and detailed article about the Upside App! Linda, your review has truly convinced me to give this app a try. It’s great to hear that Upside is a legitimate platform that provides cash payments to its users. That’s always a concern when trying out new money-saving apps. I’m also impressed by the variety of cashback offers available, with 50 offers in your area alone.

I have a few questions about the app. First, how often do the deals change throughout the day? It would be helpful to know if I need to check the app frequently to find the best offers. Additionally, I’m curious about the processing time for rebates. You mentioned that it typically takes 24 to 48 hours, but have you ever experienced any delays or issues with receiving your cashback?

Regarding the referral program, it’s fantastic to hear that both the referrer and the referred person receive a $15 bonus. I can definitely see myself sharing this app with my friends and family, especially since everyone buys gas. I’m also excited to hear that there are plans to expand the referral program to include grocery and restaurant deals in the future.

Lastly, I want to commend Upside for their commitment to sustainability and supporting the community. It’s refreshing to see a company contribute 1% of its revenue to projects that reduce carbon emissions and help tackle food waste. It adds an extra layer of satisfaction to know that by using the Upside App, I’m contributing to these efforts.

Overall, your personal experience with Upside and your positive review have convinced me to give this app a try. Thank you for providing such valuable information and sharing your insights. I’ll definitely be downloading the Upside App and exploring the cashback opportunities in my area.

    • Hi Mike,

I’ve used Upside since 2020 and have never experienced any processing delays beyond their stated policy. In my experience, the rebate appears in my account within a day or two.

I’m glad you’re going to give it a try. These days, gas and food both take a bite out of the budget. If I can save money on these essentials, I have that much more cash available for indulgences. For me, the decision is a no-brainer.

      Happy saving!

Your article helped me a lot to recognize that there are dependable cashback apps out there. I never had the courage to open any of those before, as I get really suspicious of such apps and their actual purposes. Knowing that there is an app that is actually tried and does what it promises is very comforting.

Thank you very much for this review

  7. This is a very interesting and informational article that you have written Linda, discussing exactly what is the Upside App. I know this will be helpful to others who browse upon your site like I did looking for specific information about this app to avoid being taken advantage of.

I had heard of this app what it was called GetUpside and always wondered whether the promises made were legitimate or if there was some catch to the way that the app functions.

The promo code being supplied to give the user a one-time bonus add to the appeal and authenticity of the platform in my experience as you don’t usually see these same practices among scam sites.

I am curious how much you think a person could earn in cash back each month by using this application?

    Reply
    • Hi Joseph,

The amount earned with Upside will vary a lot by individual and also based on your location.  You receive cashback as a percentage of your purchases. For example, my gas tank only holds 13 gallons of gas. If you drive a larger vehicle your potential savings when you fill the tank will be much greater. This is an ideal app for folks with a recreational vehicle or who routinely drive long distances.

Depending on your location within the US, you may also have more participating businesses. Many areas can use the app for grocery store purchases.

The more often you indulge at your favorite restaurants, the greater your savings will be as well.

I was able to take advantage of 2 special offers of $1/gal savings this month so it worked out well.

I recommend that you download the app for free and see what’s available in your location and based on your circumstances you can get a clearer picture of the advantages.

      I hope this helped!

But I believe that this kind of app is very interesting when you need to save money. I think that with the inflation and everything that is coming to us, it’s necessary to have this kind of app in our daily lives to get good bargains!

I have a question for you. Is there a way to see all the regions served by the Upside app? It could be useful for those who plan to travel and want to see if they can get cash back at their destination. Do you know how I can do that?

Thanks for introducing this app and giving great tips on how to use it.

    • Hi Pablo,

Yes, that’s an easy question. Upside is available throughout the US. The number and types of offers do vary in different regions. The great thing about the Upside App is that it’s personalized for each user. Just download the App, create a free account, and enable location tracking to see all of your offers.

Location tracking makes it the perfect companion for travelers. As you travel, your nearby offers will automatically update. Since the App is free and painless to join, there’s no downside to this at all.

      Happy saving!

  13. Oh wow, the Upside App sounds real interesting? I mean, who doesn’t love saving money, especially on things we use every day like gas and food?

It’s pretty neat how it connects you with local businesses and gives you cash back on purchases. I’m also impressed that it’s been around since 2015 and has been growing and improving all this time. I mean, if Linda hasn’t paid full price for a tank of gas since she joined in 2020, that’s some serious savings right there!

The fact that you can check the app for the best deals before you head out is a massive plus. Plus, I really appreciate how user-friendly it sounds – it seems like they’ve made it as easy as possible to claim rebates and get paid.

But what caught my attention even more is Upside’s commitment to the greater community. It’s great to see a company that’s not just about saving us money but also cares about reducing carbon emissions and preventing food waste.

The only downside I can see is that not all cities might have grocery stores participating, which Linda mentions. But it looks like they’re expanding, so hopefully, that will change.

I must say, the Upside App seems like a total win-win – for our wallets and the community. Might just have to give it a go and see what savings I can scoop up!

I simply scan my receipts from participating gas stations, grocery stores, and restaurants, I earn cashback rewards that I can later redeem. I get paid for something I would do anyway!

It’s incredible how those cashback savings quickly add up. I can stretch my budget further and free up extra money for other things I enjoy.

Your article showcases all of this and helps people like me understand the value of this app! It really helps and thank you for the information, if people are interested in the app but unsure, this is the place to look for answers!

It sure seems to work brilliantly for you.  I would like to try it.  I like the way it connects consumers and businesses in such a win-win way.  I especially like how it contributes to sustainability and carbon reduction programs and food banks. This kind of attitude is, in my humble opinion, the wave of the future for any business that wants to thrive.

I have to admit, I haven’t tried Upside in a rural area. I think the only way to determine if there are worthwhile offers available for you is to download it and give it a try. Users of Upside have found there’s a lot of variability across the country.

That’s why finding an app like Upside is such a rare and valuable discovery. With Upside, users can earn genuine income by simply shopping at their favorite stores and restaurants. The app offers cash-back rewards on purchases made through its platform, and users can redeem those rewards for real money.

What’s even better is that the app is straightforward and easy to use, with no hidden fees or confusing terms and conditions. It’s no wonder that users are singing the praises of Upside and thanking the creators for coming up with such a useful tool. So, if you’re tired of sifting through apps that don’t deliver, give Upside a try and see how easy it is to earn real income simply by shopping smart.

Even though we have a Prius Hybrid with a small gas tank, with the high gas prices at the moment, it sounds like a worthwhile opportunity to make some savings. Do you know whether it is available in Florida? I guess  I can check it out myself by downloading the App. Thanks a lot. Jenni.

Yes. per the Upside App website. Upside is available in Florida. Of course, Florida is a large state and some geographic areas will have more offers than others. I have a smallish gas tank myself but I still don’t like paying full price when I don’t have to.

Downloading the App will unveil all the great money-saving opportunities in your locale. You may find some great restaurant or grocery deals as well as gas.

I will definitely be making good use of this app.

    • Hi Jenny,

Yes, Upside does have a nice referral program. It has changed periodically over my time as a member. Currently, your friends and family members will each receive a one-time bonus of $15 when they join and use the App. You will also receive a bonus as the person inviting them.

The great thing from my perspective is that you can feel comfortable about recommending a tool that will save them money. Right now there’s no specified limit on invitees. Of course, all platforms have the right to modify their referral program in the future.

The process of inviting friends and family is simple. Just click the Tab at the bottom of the app screen labeled ‘Earn More’. You’ll find your unique referral code which you can share through email or your social media accounts.

Hope this helped and thanks for asking!

The nice thing about the Upside referral program is that incentives are shared. The new member receives a $15 bonus (once they make a purchase using the app) and the referrer also receives a bonus. Whether you use my promo code or someone else’s, do make sure you use a code. If you just download and join Upside without a promo code, you will miss out on a nice little incentive.

    What a great app!

I’ve tried looking for it on my phone (I live in the UK), but I don’t think it’s available to us at the moment.

I also looked at your “Coinout” app on another page, but that isn’t over here yet either (shame).

Although, I don’t think it’ll be long before someone initiates the idea over here… as there’s been a lot of media attention on the “cost of living crisis.” So, anything that can help will be much appreciated.

Thanks for a great and value packed article.

  23. This was such a thorough and insightful post on the Upside app. I had heard about this app before, but your article definitely makes me want to explore this app more. Right now, I’ve been using the Ebates extension to get cash back on my online orders. But honestly, I usually forget to press the button before I order something. With the Upside app, I would be more likely to remember using it since I could decide on where to shop based on the discounts. I’m curious to see how many locations are updated in my area.

It’s always exciting to discover new ways to save money, and I can relate to the struggle of forgetting to use cashback extensions at checkout. That’s one of the great things about the Upside app – you’re not only reminded to use it, but you can also make intentional decisions about where to shop based on the available discounts.

What I was really impressed by is Upside’s pledge to contribute a portion of their revenue to projects aimed at reducing carbon emissions and mitigating the effects of climate change. As someone who is deeply concerned about the environment and the future of our planet, this commitment deeply resonates with me. The fact that they are willing to dedicate a portion of their revenue to support such a noble cause truly speaks to their commitment to positively impacting the community.

Thanks for this informative article on the Upside app! I’ll be sure to try it out soon.

In a time where people are struggling to pay for things, this looks like such a great app and completely legitimate.
Thank you for this article Lina, it has really helped.

  26. Hi!!! Loved your niche! My parents are in the post-retirement part of life, also looking at how to earn an income as well as stay active… So I think you nailed it with your niche idea… People are retiring way too young to sit on their couch and read the paper like my grandfather did! Didn’t know this app, but I will definitely try it out. Do you know if it only works locally or also globally?

  27. Hey Linda,

As someone who loves using different apps to get many discounts, I was not aware of Upside. This review was amazing and I’m in love with your site since I am as you put it, a wanna-be retiree, haha. I just downloaded the app and will try it out, just wanted to thank you for this information and the detailed user guide, very glad I ran into this site. Thanks!

    • Hi Victor,

Thanks for the kind words. Good for you for taking advantage of the many apps like Upside to earn discounts. A comfortable retirement is not all about income. Controlling expenses is a significant factor as well. With the Upside app, you can take a bite out of some of those daily costs.

Thanks for jumping in with your comments!

  28. Hello dear!

The upside app sounds like a great saving opportunity. I like the fact that after claiming my offer I have 4 hours to make the purchase. So, I think it will work well for the restaurant, I can claim my offer and take some time to check what meal I would like to have for lunch or dinner. I will definitely be trying this one.

    Thanks for sharing!
