Receipt Hog makes some fascinating claims about turning everyday receipts into real cash. So, I expect to see questions like, how does Receipt Hog work? Or even, how much cash are we talking about?
After all, many of us have crumpled receipts scattered about most of the time, don’t we? It’s hard to think of those wadded slips as money-makers. But maybe they are!
Read on to see if Receipt Hog really can make you some cash, and how the process works.
What is the Receipt Hog App?
Receipt Hog is a mobile receipt-scanning app that’s free to join for residents of the US, Canada, or the UK. Members can snap pictures of everyday retail purchase receipts from within the app and submit them for coins or spins of the Hog slot machine, and also a sweepstakes entry.
Market Track, LLC is the market research firm that owns Receipt Hog. The purpose is to gather information about consumer purchasing behavior. When a receipt is uploaded, you are typically asked how many people participated in the shopping trip, the gender of the purchaser, and how you would rate the shopping experience (one to five stars).
Data is compiled in reports that are then sold to brands or large retail organizations. Payouts to members total $2.5 million.
How Does Receipt Hog Work?
Receipt Hog sign-up is a reasonably quick and easy process. You first download the app from either the App Store or Google Play, depending on your device. The ratings of 4.7 on the App Store and 4.3 on Google Play are quite impressive, with tens of thousands of reviews.
You must provide both an email address and your home address. From there, you have to complete a short survey with demographic profile information and enable location tracking. I immediately received a 50 coin bonus for joining. At this point, you can begin submitting any retail receipt with a transaction date in the last 14 days.
The type of items listed on your sales slip, along with the amount you spent, determines your award.
Coins
Purchases of items from stores that sell fast-moving consumer goods such as supermarkets, pharmacies, convenience markets, pet supply retailers, toy stores, or beauty supply outlets earn coins.
The number of coins you earn is based on the total dollars you spent. You will earn 5 coins for a purchase of less than $10. If the slip reports between $10 and $50, the award is 10 coins. From $50 to $100 you receive 15 coins. And, any invoice over $100 receives 20 coins,
On occasion, you may be asked to take an optional survey for additional coins. In my experience, these surveys are short (maybe 5 questions), and you earn 30 coins.
Finally, you may choose to connect your Amazon account or email account for the opportunity to earn bonus coins and additional monthly sweepstakes entries. Receipt Hog will use the connections to analyze your electronic receipts.
Hog Slots Spins
Receipts from all other retail establishments (such as clothing, hardware, furniture, auto, etc.) are termed spin-receipts. You receive one spin of the Hog slots machine for each submission.
Spins of the virtual hog slots machine have the opportunity to win additional coins. Plus, each day, one winner receives their last submitted receipt in coins.
Sweepstakes Entries
Members earn 1 sweepstakes entry with every valid receipt that is uploaded. A monthly drawing is held where you might win up to 5,000 coins. Moreover, some receipts that aren’t eligible for either coins or spins will still earn you an entry in the monthly drawing.
Gas, restaurant, bakery, and deli receipts are sweepstake-only submissions but shouldn’t be overlooked.
Limitations and Bonuses
Receipt Hog encourages users to upload every week, and they award bonuses if you meet your goal each week. But you are limited to 20 receipt submissions per week and no more than 3 slips from the same retailer each day.
If you ever have any questions on what you earned from a particular receipt, just tap on the bell icon in the upper left-hand corner of the home screen. Every submission is listed with the award you received. Opening any entry in the list will display the photo you snapped.
It’s actually a very handy way to organize and keep track of your expenditures for budgeting. And, a picture of your receipt could come in handy if you have to return something and the original receipt is lost.
Receipt Hog Rewards
You can request a redemption as soon as you accumulate at least 1,000 coins. Your reward choices are an Amazon gift card, a prepaid Visa card, or a PayPal distribution. If you delay receipt of your reward, coins become more valuable the more you earn.
Here are the redemption values:
- 1,000 coins = $5
- 2,900 coins =$15
- 4,300 coins = $25
- 6,500 coins = $40
Just click on the Rewards tab at the bottom of your home screen to claim your earnings. It may take up to 7 days to process your payout. But I have not had any issues whatsoever with receiving the Amazon gift cards I requested.
Unlike many similar platforms, Receipt Hog does not have a referral program. It seems they attract all the members they need without one.
Final Thoughts
I hope my answer to your question, how does Receipt Hog work, was helpful. Can you really earn some cash with this application? Yes! Receipt Hog is an entirely legitimate program that pays you for the receipts that provide useful data on your consumer purchasing habits.
Is Receipt Hog worthy of your time? I think that’s a question only you can answer. I think it’s worthwhile because it takes so little time and effort to get paid. We all buy a ton of stuff during the course of every month, right? Why not derive some value from those purchase transactions that you engage in any way?
For me, Receipt Hog is a no-brainer because it’s so simple!

Interesting app no doubt. Whoever thought of getting perks for your receipts at the store. And it doesn’t look to be too complicated of a process using Receipt Hog. Unlike other apps this one looks like it might be worth checking out. I have tried some apps that give you extra coins to cash in for games but shopping is something we all do. If you can get something back by just plugging in some numbers on an app, I say it’s worth it. Hopefully they don’t bombard with offers and ads. Either way I think I’ll at least check it out. Thank you for the receipt-hog review. Is there a receipt value limit before rewards are received? Is the ‘coin value’ fixed, they could change (devalue) a coin to reduce the rewards? Much like they do with ‘air points. Airpoints are worth less than what they were worth back in the ’90s. Is Receipt-hog available in New Zealand?

Unfortunately, Receipt Hog is currently available only in the US, Canada, and the UK. Perhaps at some point in the future, they’ll expand to New Zealand. as far as coin values are concerned, coins are awarded based on type of receipt and amount spent. Even a slip for less than $10 earns 5 coins. Coins are also redeemed based on defined redemption rates.
