Savvy online shoppers increasingly seek out ways to save money and score better deals. The Honey App is intriguing but still a relatively new kid on the block. Thus the inevitable question, is the Honey app legit?
There are dozens of apps today that claim to save shoppers money, Some of them are very worthwhile, and I use them all the time. However, others are cumbersome to use and more trouble than they’re worth because they never save me much of anything.
With all the buzz about Honey, I had to join and check it out. One of the more appealing aspects for me is that Honey claims to save you time in addition to money. This factor caught my eye because it’s rare for anyone to whine about having too much time, right?
So, please stick with me my friends because today you’re going to get the full scoop on Honey.
What is the Honey App?
The Honey app is a free browser extension that is currently supported on Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Opera, and Edge. Once installed, Honey saves online shoppers the trouble of conducting searches for coupons or promo codes because the app will do it for you. The largest discount found is automatically applied when you checkout at more than 30,000 online stores.
According to Crunchbase, Honey is headquartered in Los Angeles, CA and has been around since October 2012. A significant influx of new investment capital in late 2017 appears to be spurring growth and expansion. The inspiration for this unique app is a compelling human interest story you can read about here.
Effortless savings. Hmmm….seems to be a no-brainer!
How Does the Honey App Work?
Honey makes it super easy to be a thrifty shopper by taking all the work out of locating and applying coupons. As with any browser extension, the Honey icon sits on your browser toolbar.
The icon is grayed out when you’re not on a participating site but lights up and turns a bright gold color if you navigate to a site with which Honey Partners. A number may also be displayed to indicate promo codes that Honey has found in its database for the site.
View the video below for an excellent overview of how this tool works:
Download and Install the Honey App
Downloading and installing the Honey browser extension is free and requires 2 clicks. All you need is an email address and a password to join and create an account. You can also sign up using either Google or Facebook. More than 10,000,000 people have already joined the community.
What is Honey Gold?
Honey Gold is a rewards program that you’re automatically eligible for when you add the Honey browser extension and create your account. Currently, there are roughly 4,000 participating merchants where you can earn rebates (Gold) on your purchase.
The amount of the rebate awarded is randomly generated and differs by site. When you land on a website that offers Gold, and you click the Honey icon, you’ll see a symbol positioned next to the vendor’s name. For example, Home Depot is a participating site and the recent rebate available was 1-5%.
Click the activate button to calculate a reward that is added to your account in the form of points where 1 point is the equivalent of $.01.
Within 2 weeks, or possibly a little sooner, points will appear in your account as “pending”. Typically, points will retain their pending status for 60 days when they will become available. After you’ve earned 1,000 points your reward may be redeemed for a $10 gift card to many popular vendors including Amazon, Walmart, Target, or eBay.
Honey Gold operates very much like other cash rebate sites such as TopCashback, Ebates, or Mr. Rebates. The randomized savings percentage is a bit different than other programs. To be honest, this is my least favorite aspect, and I would prefer knowing what the rebate will be in advance.
If you’re wondering how a free platform can afford to pay rebates, let me explain. Honey has affiliate marketing relationships with the vendors where Honey Gold is available, and vendor commissions are being shared. Gold is pending for 60 days because the merchants aren’t paying commissions to Honey until after product return periods expire.
Can I Use the Honey App on Amazon?
The ability to use Honey on Amazon was a game-changer for me because I shop on this retail giant all the time. Amazon does not offer Gold rebates, and they rarely have promo codes. But Honey customers located in the US can take advantage of three tools to improve their Amazon shopping experience.
It’s important to understand that many third-party vendors offer similar products through Amazon’s site and they don’t all charge the same price. You should also be aware that prices can fluctuate on those treasures you have your eye on. The following three tools can help you to get the best deal: best-price detection, price history, and droplist.
Let’s view some examples of how price detection works.
Here’s an example where Honey detects that a different vendor offers a better price:
If Honey checks and you’re already seeing the best price for a product, that fact is confirmed.
Click on the Honey icon to the left of “Best Deal,” and you will see all recent price changes. If you’re still debating a purchase or don’t need it right away, you can use the Droplist feature to be notified if the price of the product decreases. All three of these tools can contribute to a superior shopping experience.
Does Honey Offer a Mobile Version of the App?
There’s no mobile version available yet, but an iPhone app called the Honey Smart Shopping Assistant is due to be released on February 15, 2019. You can pre-order it on the App Store.
I’ve pre-ordered my mobile version. So, I’ll be sure to update this review once I’ve had an opportunity to check it out.
Can I Make Money With Honey?
Like many similar rewards programs or shopping tools, Honey has a referral program. Once you join the Honey community, you receive a unique referral link. Share your link on social media, or email the link to friends and family.
For each person who signs up for a free account through your link and makes a subsequent online purchase, you make $5. The cap on referral income is $1,000, so the potential is limited. Still, this represents an opportunity to make a little side income in addition to saving money on purchases.

Summing Up
Why pay full price for online purchases when there are alternative solutions like Honey? I’m saving money with it regularly, so is the Honey App Legit? I have to give it a big thumbs up.
Savings will vary based on the amount of shopping you do online and the merchant websites you frequent. But since the installation of Honey is free, quick, and easy, why not give it a try?
Happy savings!

Dear Linda,
I do often come across banners and posts related to the Honey app and I wanted to have a look to see whether it’s a genuine or scam site. Your review post helped me to find the answer.
I loved how easy the review makes it for readers to understand how Honey works with no additional research needed.
Your review saved me time and effort. For sure this is gonna be very helpful for us to save some money. I am going to share your post with my friends who make more online purchases. My only concern is there is no mobile app for Android phones but as you mentioned hopefully expecting it soon.
Many blog posts ask us to spend money but your review post is helping us to save money without any investment which is awesome.
Much Success!
Paul
Hi Paul,
Yes, I’m also anxiously awaiting a mobile version. Since Honey was designed as a browser extension and most mobile browsers don’t allow for extensions, the mobile version is requiring a little different approach. Hence, more time is needed for development. The iPhone version is scheduled for release in February 2019 and an Android version is in the works.
Thanks for your comments!
I was looking for a review on the Honey App. This article had everything I needed to know about the Honey App. This app sounds really great and I couldn’t believe that I didn’t find this app earlier. I also love how the Honey App has a great referral program.
Thank you so much for sharing this article.
Hi Sujander,
I’m glad the post was able to answer your questions. Thanks for reading and chiming in!
Based on your review, it definitely looks like I owe it to myself and my wallet to check out the Honey App. In watching the video and reading your overview, it really looks easy to set up and helpful when shopping online. The fact that it is free is also a huge deal to me! Thanks for doing such great research and presenting it in a way that was thorough and clear. I’ll be looking into this for sure!
Hi Steve,
Yes, based on my experience with Honey I do think your wallet will thank you 🙂 I hope you’ll pop back once you’ve had a chance to try it out and let me know how it works out for you.
Thanks for reading and sharing your thoughts!
I’ve used Ibotta and apps similar to Honey in the past. The one thing I haven’t seen before is the comparison shopping on Amazon. Much like you I spend a lot on Amazon! So this tool could save me a ton of money (and a lot of time researching prices) while just doing what I normally do! I’m going to download it now!!!
Have you noticed any shortcoming with Honey? With the $5 bonus, do the people that sign up using your link have to spend a certain amount? Or will any purchase count?
Love that they are going to be releasing a mobile version very soon!
Thanks for the review and turning me on to this cool app!
The price comparison feature of Honey is unique and one that I particularly appreciate. This is because I don’t always take the time to check out multiple vendors myself for the best prices even though I know I may be overpaying. Honey does the work for me which is great.
You mention Ibotta which brings to mind another advantage of Honey. I’ve also used iBotta and similar programs which save me money. The nice thing about Honey is that you don’t have to upload any receipts to get your discount so it’s less cumbersome to use.
As for the referral program, your friends do not have to spend any specific amount for you to receive a $5 referral fee. Any purchase that’s eligible for Honey Gold is enough. When their Gold points are credited to their account (usually in 60 days) your referral feed will be credited as well.
Thanks for asking and I hope that answers your question.
The honey app is a good program to earn a little from the expenditures you make. You wouldn’t have to pay the full price seeing that you’ll receive a rebate (gold) when you use an affiliated store. But seeing the low value of the honey gold, it’s going to take some time for this to add up or am I wrong?
Expecting your feedback.
Louis
Hi Louis.
No. you’re not wrong. I like to save money where I can and stretch my budget a little further by doing so. In that way. I end up with a little more of what my grandma used to call “mad money”. Honey is one of several apps that I regularly use to accomplish my goal of never paying full price. But it’s very true that you won’t be paying the bills with these rebates.
Now if you’re interested in earning a more substantial income online, I suggest you check out my number one recommendation which is the online platform where I started this amazing website. Wealthy Affiliate offers a completely risk-free opportunity to explore the benefits of creating an online business.
I hope this helps and thanks for asking.
I read with interest your review of the Honey App savings and referral program. Although there are a number of such programs out there, it tells me that there is a market for the product and that if they do the job well, they will succeed. They have since you mention they have been around since 2012.
In my case, I use such programs all the time. I buy many things online these days and find myself going less and less to the malls and supermarkets. It is just more convenient. This is why apps like this one work well for me. I still get the advantage of saving a bit of money as I shop, without being on-site.
I like the fact that you can also earn a referral fee, even if it is capped at $1000. That is good money you cannot ignore! That they do not have a mobile app is a minus for me, and likely for many others, as so many are using their smartphones these days to shop.
But as you say, they are preparing to launch an app now, so this is not a show-stopper for me. I think that this app has legs and I will sign up. Thanks for the review and information!
Hi Dave,
I too just love the convenience of shopping online and it’s even more fun when you can take advantage of apps like Honey to save money on your purchases. The referral fee is nice and it’s very easy to share your link with friends and family in an email or on social media. The nicest part is that your friends will appreciate the heads up.
I’m pleased to read you’re signing up for Honey. I’m sure you’ll have no regrets. Happy savings and thanks for your comments!
Thanks Linda for this simple yet amazing review about Honey App. I loved the flow of the review and the simple language for readers to understand how Honey works.
I am going to install this and recommend to family and friends who shop online. I am not sure if it works for Amazon in India but will check it out. This helps save money and it offers rebates and affiliate program as well. I have the same predicament of running through multiple sites looking for the best prices and coupon codes. I am going to try Honey app and hope it saves me some $$.
Look forward to reading more of your reviews.
Hi Rudolph.
I’m glad you found the review helpful. Honey currently supports shopping sites in the US, Canada, Australia. the United Kingdom, and India. So, I hope it will work well for you.
Good luck and thanks for stopping by!
Hi,I am happy to read about Honey apps and moreover its also applicable to be use with AMAZON but is it only for US customers? I noticed many other rewards program only available for certain country. If you have time, can you suggest any reward programs which can be use by international customers like me? Thank you in advance.
Hi Azaliha.
Honey is not limited to US customers. You don’t say where you’re located but Honey is also currently available to folks in Canada, Australia. the United Kingdom and India. There are also several other nice rewards programs available where you can earn cash rebates for online shopping. You might want to check out TopCashback, Ebates. and Mr. Rebates. Hope this helps.
Hi Linda,
I use Honey and other extensions that save me money on Amazon. Honey is awesome. I especially love that it helps you find the best deal for an item on Amazon. Most people assume that when you find a specific item on Amazon that there is only one offer available AND it’s the best price. However that is not always the case on Amazon as multiple sellers can sell the same exact item. Honey lets you know if the item you have found is the best deal and if not what IS the better deal.
Hi BluOke,
Yes, I’m a frequent Amazon shopper and I also love that Honey finds you the best deal available. Before using this app I wasn’t aware that multiple vendors could be offering the same product at varying prices. I feel like Honey has made me a more savvy shopper.
It’s great to hear from another Honey user that has also had positive experiences. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks and well done, your website is an inspiration for newbie bloggers, The honey app seems to be quite new, never heard of it until now. Thanks once again for bringing it to our notice. The most important factor to consider before trying it out is its usefulness, and this article has done justice to that question. It is left for us to decide.
Hi Zuchii.
Honey was first launched back in 2012. But they’ve expanded considerably after receiving substantial cash investments late last year. I think you’ll be hearing a lot more from them. I’ve found the app very useful, and I think that will be true for anyone who does a lot of shopping online. I hope you’ll check it out and pop back to let me know how it’s working for you.
Thanks for your comments!
THis is awesome, with the honey app you get to collect points that you can use as rewards in some participating stores.
I don’t do online shopping a lot, but my sister does, so I will refer her to your post and advise her to consider having the honey app.
Thanks for this information.
Marita
Hi Marita,
I appreciate your passing the information along. If your sister does a lot of online shopping I think she will be grateful for the information. After all, who doesn’t like to save money?
This is awesome, I am a user of the honey app, and all I can say is It works! I have saved so much while I have been shopping online thanks to this app, I am just sad that I had not discovered it sooner because it would have helped me save so much more. Also, I had no idea that I can not only save money with honey but also make some, Wow thanks for sharing, will be checking it out some more.
Hi Jamiro,
Yes, Honey makes it very easy to share your link with family and friends on social media and earn referral fees. You’ll want to check your account and look for your link.
Thanks for chiming in!
Hi Linda, your review of this honey app is informative. From your thorough description, using the app will not be too complicated. I have heard and seen so many apps that promise to help one save while shopping. The good thing here is that you have tested the app and it worked. The clinch for me is that I can use the Honey app on Amazon and at the same time make money with the app through the referral program. I will really love them to work on a mobile version of the app, as this will encourage more users to make use of the app.
Hi Gracen,
Yes, I’m looking forward to the mobile version. The iPhone version is due out in February 2019. I’ve pre-ordered my copy so stop back for an updated review that includes the scoop on the mobile version.
Thanks for commenting!
I like this app solely because it is giving a good discount to its members and they can be able to buy what they feel want at a lesser price. Earning is a bonus after achievement of the products that you have been looking for. Being in the Middle East. this product is not available to us or in Asia and Africa. So Americans and Canadians should take full advantage of this offer.
Hi Charles,
Yes, it is unfortunate that the Honey app is not yet available to all international customers. I believe they’re working on expanding their availability. So you might want to continue to check periodically.
Thank you for sharing this great review about the honey app.
I never heard about the honey app before but after I read your article overall it seems to be a good app to save money when shopping online, I’ve been using Ebates for my online shopping and it works really good. I will compare these two and see which one is better for me. How long does it take for the honey app to pay for your earnings?
Thanks for your interest in the Honey app. Some features of Honey provide an immediate savings benefit. If Honey finds you a promo code, it’s deducted from your total cost at checkout. When using Honey on Amazon, you also get the instant benefit of knowing the lowest price available for the product. Honey Gold works very much like Ebates and pays out in roughly the same period of time (about 60 days). Both programs are sharing their affiliate marketing commissions with customers, but they have to wait to receive those commissions. I hope this answers your question.
