Mr. Rebates Review: Can You Really Make Money?

If you’re an avid online shopper, I’m glad you’re here. This Mr. Rebates review might be just the ticket for you. No, you won’t be kissing off the boss. You can’t make that kind of money,

But, you also won’t be paying full price on purchases anymore. And, the savings you rack up on stuff you planned to buy anyway can be substantial over the course of a year.

Cash rebate sites are a terrific way to stretch a meager budget. Quite simply, they’re a smart option for just about anyone. In fact, you may also want to check out TopCashback and Swagbucks because vendors and rates can vary across platforms and it’s always best to examine all your options.

So, let’s see how Mr. Rebates can work for you, shall we?

What is Mr. Rebates?

Mr. Rebates is an online portal that supplies savvy shoppers with discounts, online coupons, and cash back rebates that make shopping online more economical. As consumers, we can take comfort in the fact that Mr. Rebates launched back in 2002. So, it’s not a fly-by-night operation.

What is Mr Rebates

With more than 2,500 partner merchants, Mr. Rebates offers a vast array of shopping venues. Expect to see the e-commerce giants like Amazon, eBay, and Walmart along with an attractive line-up of your favorite specialty shops. Choice is a wonderful thing, and this platform certainly offers tremendous variety.

Cash rebates most often range from 1 to 10%, but it’s not unusual to see rates as high as 30% for select vendor offerings. Hence, it makes a lot of sense to check the available deals before buying. You can search for your favorite retailer or browse stores by merchandise categories.

You’ll also want to check out the weekly deals and the featured weekly store to score some better values!

Anyone can join Mr. Rebates for free, but it seems that shoppers in the US and Canada will have the best experiences due to potential international restrictions.

My #1 Recommendation for Making Money Online

Is Mr. Rebates Legit and How Does it Work?

Mr, Rebates is absolutely a highly-reputable organization and a completely legitimate opportunity to make a bit of money as a side hustle. Membership in the program is free, and the concept behind the website is a rather simple one based on affiliate marketing.

In a nutshell, Mr. Rebates is an affiliate of each of the companies featured on their site. Clicking on a store name through the Mr. Rebates portal sets a cookie that identifies the source of customer traffic. If a sale takes place, Mr. Rebates earns a commission on the transaction.

A portion of the commission earned is then shared with the customer. Members should expect to see “pending rebate” amounts show up in their account within 1 to 3 days based on shipment dates of their purchases. Additionally, you’ll receive a $5 sign-up bonus as a new member once you make your first purchase.

The infographic below details the process for Mr. Rebate members.

How Does Mr. Rebates Work

Cash rebates earned by members are reported as pending for 90 days before funds can be withdrawn. This delay allows for final confirmation and payment of commissions to Mr. Rebates. Virtually all vendors have a return window, and naturally, commissions are not paid on canceled sales.

After 90 days have elapsed, any pending rebates in a member’s account become available.

Referrals – Another Way to Earn

The Mr. Rebates program gives members the opportunity to earn additional income by referring family, friends, and social media followers. Their website makes it easy to share your link by email or by posting to various social media platforms.

For each referral that joins under your link, you’ll earn 20% of their cashback rewards for life. Your friends will earn the $5 new member bonus (after their first purchase) and continue to experience online shopping benefits. So, the referral program seems like a win-win.

How Do You Get Paid?

The minimum distribution amount from your Mr. Rebates account is $10. As soon as your “available balance” reaches $10, you may request payment via check, PayPal, or Amazon Gift Card.

Payments are processed on the first of each month for all redemption requests made in the previous month. Since 2002, Mr, Rebates has paid members millions of dollars in rebates. As discussed, cash back is not immediate, but they do pay in accordance with their terms and policies.

Quick Cash Back Button

I use Google Chrome as my Web browser. If you also do, I recommend downloading the Mr, Rebates Quick Cash Button as a browser extension. It’s a handy feature to have. The biggest advantage is the reminder you get when you visit a participating merchant’s website.

To receive cash back on your shopping expenditures, you must go through Mr. Rebates’ link, and that’s an easy thing to forget. So, I find the reminder very helpful. The browser button is also a convenient way to quickly access your account balance and see current promotions available.

Mr. Rebates Mobile App

So many people rely almost exclusively on smartphones today that it’s really nice to see mobile apps available. Whether you have an IOS or Android device, you can download a Mr. Rebates mobile app to earn cash back on the go.

Cautions and Complaints

Overall, there are minimal complaints with Mr. Rebates and a lot of very positive recommendations. The most common complaint relates to not receiving expected rebates upon completion of a purchase transaction. This fact prompts me to leave you with some cautionary advice.

All websites of this nature rely on the proper cookies being set. You must access your vendor of choice through the Mr. Rebates portal. Moreover, you shouldn’t have any other browser windows open. If you belong to more than one cashback site, naturally you’ll want to do some comparing to see who has the best offer.

But, before you actually click through to a vendor website, be sure to close all browser windows and start a fresh session. You can only use one cashback site for a given transaction, and you don’t want any confusions regarding your choice.

You should also be aware that you can’t use any coupons or promo codes from other platforms. Attempting to combine discounts from multiple sites will negate your Mr. Rebates award.

Wrapping Up

I sincerely hope you found this Mr. Rebates review helpful and that you’re able to start making some money through their website. Unlike some other programs in the online space, Mr. Rebates is a legitimate operation with consumer reviews that are generally very positive.

The bottom line is that if you’re not using cashback websites, you’re paying far too much money for your online purchases. Savings definitely add up over time, and you can earn a little extra money with this site which is always cool.

To be sure, the earning opportunity is limited, So, if you’d like to significantly broaden your online earnings capability, I invite you to read this post on my favorite way to make money online.

Happy Shopping!

  1. I never tried TopCashback but I tried Swagbucks a few years ago. Do you think TopCashback is any better than Swagbucks? Mr. Rebates seems like a good one to try and I might even join their affiliate program. The rebates they have are better than most credit card offers have too. Thanks for doing the research about them.

    • Hi Shaun,

I’m a member of all three programs (Mr. Rebates, TopCashback, and Swagbucks), and I recommend that approach from the perspective of understanding all of your options. All three sites are completely free to join. Moreover, all of them are completely legitimate, have been around long enough to be reliable, and pay members in accordance with their terms and policies.

Mr. Rebates does indeed offer some nice cashback rates and their affiliate program is a good one, One advantage of joining all three programs is that there are some difference in their vendor line-ups. Of the three programs, TopCashback has the largest number of merchants (4,000). But all of these programs offer exclusive deals and promotions. So, there will always be instances when one is more advantageous for You based on your needs.

Swagbucks was the first reward program I joined years ago and I’m a big fan. It won’t necessarily have the best shopping rebate deals in any given instance but it offers more ways to earn than either of the other programs.

This has been kind of a long-winded way of saying you can maximize your benefits and make more money by joining all of these programs. I hope the Mr. Rebates affiliate program works out well for you.

  2. Thanks for the tips Linda – it sounds like you’re truly living the dream!

I do so much online shopping, so I was searching for a way to get rewards from the amount I buy. After reading your review I will definitely try Mr Rebates as it seems to be a great place to start, and a legitimate company. (there are so many scams out there)

    • Hi Holly,

I guess I do enjoy a very sweet lifestyle these days that many folks dream about. I’m retired from the 9 to 5 grind, but with the help of Wealthy Affiliate, I’ve found passion in blogging. My business is steadily growing and thriving. It may not be a piece of cake but it’s not rocket science either 🙂 It’s nothing more than creating informative content, being patient, and persisting.

You’re not alone in all that online shopping. We all find ourselves going online with increasing regularity. For that reason, I felt there was real value in reviewing the many rebate and rewards programs out there because so many readers like yourself have questions. So, I join them all and trying them out which has been very beneficial.

Mr. Rebates is definitely not a scam. They’re one of the good guys and I’ve enjoyed some nice savings as a member.

Once you’ve had a chance to try them out, I hope you’ll stop back and share your experiences. Good luck!

  3. I’ve been using Mr. Rebates for about 2 years and yeah they are legit because they do pay. So, they’re definitely a good option for those looking to save money. I used to shop at Walmart a lot through Mr. Rebates and racked up about $100 worth of rebates (cashback) within about 3 months. Whats the difference between rebates and cashback anyway, are they the same thing?

But I don’t like the 90 day period to see your rebates go from “pending” to “payable,” and I wish it was a shorter time. Sometimes it even takes longer than 90 days. But overall they have paid on time every time.

    • Hi Kent,

I’m glad to hear that others have had similar positive experiences with Mr. Rebates and enjoyed some nice savings. I must agree that it would be nice if the payout period were shorter. We’re all a little impatient, aren’t we? Realistically Mr. Rebates has to wait until they’re paid by the vendors they partner with as affiliates. But, as you’ve pointed out, they do pay. So, that’s the good thing!

Keep enjoying those savings. I’m convinced there’s really no reason to pay full price for much of anything with all the reward and cashback programs out there!
