How to Make Money Selling Essential Oils

Online opportunities abound for affiliate marketers. In today’s discussion about how to make money selling essential oils, we’ll look at yet another awesome niche possibility. Essential oils have been a hot trending topic with broad appeal for several years now.

Is essential oils a good niche fit for you?

Affiliate marketing success begins with finding a fascinating subject that speaks to you and your interests. You can then share your enthusiasm and acquired knowledge with a like-minded target market.

What better way to connect with those who share your passions than the Internet where billions of individuals go to seek information every day?

What Are Essential Oils?

Essential oils are fragrant, concentrated liquids extracted from various plant elements including bark, seeds, leaves, stems, roots, and flowers. Many diverse cultures have used essential oils for centuries as natural remedies to improve physical, mental and emotional health.

Here are just a few of the widely touted uses and benefits of various essential oils.

  • healing and therapeutic benefits
  • natural first aid for wounds and sunburn
  • soothe sore muscles and promote relaxation
  • supports weight loss
  • insect repellant
  • stimulates hair growth
  • effective skin and beauty products
  • cleaning, air freshening, and deodorizing
  • natural sleep aid
  • homemade acne face wash
  • fight cold and flu symptoms

First of all, this is just a short list that’s by no means all-inclusive. But I think we can easily envision various target audiences seeking help and information. At its core, affiliate marketing is primarily about answering questions and satisfying consumer needs.

Perhaps you can picture moms wanting to stock a first aid kit? Or maybe athletes needing a cleaning solution for ripe (!) sporting gear or relief from aching muscles. How about insomniacs desperate for a good night’s sleep, or homeowners desiring wonderfully smelling homes?

Intuitively, essential oil appeal seems vast. But let’s support our intuition with some research data.

Support for Essential Oils as an Affiliate Marketing Niche

I’ve researched many different niche possibilities. I always start in the same place because the search engines like Google compile enormous databases around Internet search terms. So, let’s start with Google Trends and view a graph of interest in essential oils over the past 5 years.

Can we all agree that interest is strong? 🙂

Keywords Are the Secret Sauce

How do affiliate marketers attract readers to a website? It all starts with the effective use of keywords. Keywords are nothing more than search terms or phrases that people type into a Google search box in their quest for data and answers to burning questions.

After viewing this positive trend line for essential oils, I turned to my favorite keyword research tool to dig a little deeper. I wanted to see how many people type in the keyword ‘essential oils’ on a monthly basis. Here’s what I discovered.

Average Monthly Searches for Essential Oils

Just more confirmation that droves of Internet readers are drawn to this topic. Now, as you might expect, the basic keyword ‘essential oils’ is extremely competitive because many websites are already targeting this phrase. Due to this fact, ranking in Google for this phrase as a new webmaster is highly unlikely.

This is because existing sites have already established authority. But please don’t let that discourage you.

Virtually all niches have a huge number of untapped keywords. It is easy to rank for these keyword phrases because interest is there and the competition is very low. Internet marketers refer to these keywords as “low hanging fruit.”

Go for the Long-Tail Keywords

I was able to quickly uncover a wealth of low-competition, long-tail keywords that can easily form the basis of powerful and extremely useful articles. Long-tail keywords are just search phrases that contain 3 or more words. Longer queries often have much lower competition. A big plus!

Due to the more specific nature, the number of monthly searches will also be less. But don’t let that worry you. Long tail keywords are often far more effective than broader terms because searchers are well past the browsing stage and much closer to making a purchase decision.

When I perform keyword research, my objective is to find phrases that receive regular monthly traffic (I like to see at least 50 searches per month) but have a very small number of competing websites targeting that exact term. Hence, traffic from each blog post may be small, but as you build out your site and add content, cumulative traffic will grow.

The list of low-competition keywords below is just the tip of the iceberg but should give you a broad sense of possible article topics. The first number that follows each keyword represents monthly searches for the term and the second number reflects the QSR (Quoted Search Results) for this phrase. QSR indicates the number of websites currently targeting this exact search term.

  1. This looks like a pretty good product line to be selling Linda. I’ve written books in the past and one of them was about essential oils. I’m into natural things for health and healing and I think more people should look into them. I actually wasn’t aware there were so many essential oils! I guess I should brush up on my own book!

Essential oils is a booming business. Those of us who are fans engage in regular purchase transactions. We’re also very open to expanding our usage by trying new home remedy solutions. Affiliate marketers need only identify the questions that people are seeking answers to and provide extraordinarily helpful answers to those questions.

  3. Wow amazing article about Essential oils! I always think of oils as just something nice to smell around your house, when you plug something into a wall.

I had no idea that there were so many other benefits to using them. Also I had no idea it was such a great niche to pursue and make money in.

Do you have lots of oils around your house? My wife has some kind of plug in, in just about every room of ours lol.

    • Hi Michael,

Yes, I have several infusers in my home. Essential oils made wonderful air fresheners. I also use lavendar in my bedroom because it’s one of the best sleep aids I’ve found. But I think my favorite oil is tea tree oil. It’s really great stuff for cuts and abrasions. It’s good for both people and pets. I first started using it to help heal a rub wound on my horses leg and it worked so well I began using it myself. There are numerous uses and benefits which is what attracted me to this niche.

      Thanks very much for commenting!

  5. Hi Linda,

I really enjoyed the idea of essential oils. Going by your article, I think this niche has so much potential. As you said, the term ‘essential oils’ might’ve become competitive but there is always an untapped area in any niche. The only thing we should do is to brainstorm.

I have a couple of questions though, the demand of any niche fluctuates over time, So what should I do if the demand declines? How can I tweak my blog at that time?

    • Hi Sethu,

I think the secret to success in any niche is research and remaining in touch with your target audience. Participating in forums is an excellent way to keep your ear to the ground. Keyword research is necessary to ensure you understand the latest burning questions and pain points of your market. Questions and product recommendations will change over time but in most cases I don’t think all interest in the topic will dry up. If you can craft quality content around the latest issues, your blog should do well for a long time.

Good luck to you and thanks for reading!
